Religious Freedom in India: A Call to Prayer for GBC Graduates
On February 24, 2024, Grace Bible College celebrated its 20th Commencement in central India. Six students received their Bachelor of Theology degrees, and nine received diplomas in Biblical Studies. It was a joyful day of prayer, worship, and gratitude.
Most of these graduates plan to return to GBC to continue their studies and prepare for full-time ministry. But they are stepping into a difficult and increasingly dangerous environment. Religious freedom in India is under growing threat, and bold faith is now more critical than ever.
Rising Pressure Against Christians in India
Just two days after GBC’s graduation, the northeastern state of Assam passed the “The Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024″. 
Though aimed at curbing “magical healing” and deceptive practices, many Christians believe it’s an attempt to limit prayer for healing and other spiritual ministry activities.
The language in the bill leaves room for vague interpretation. Terms like “ulterior motives” and “magical healing” are open-ended, which may lead to the targeting of pastors and Christian leaders. While the bill is currently limited to Assam, it reflects a growing trend across India.
At the national level, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues its mission to establish Hinduism as the only recognized religion in India. This shift is reshaping the cultural and legal landscape, especially for Christians and other religious minorities.
A Call to Prayer for India and GBC
We cannot share details of recent threats and persecution in various parts of India. However, we are asking our partners and supporters to stand with us in prayer.

The Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024
Language included in the bill: “No person shall take part in any sort of advertisement relating to any kind of medicine, remedy directly or indirectly relating to any false claim to cure diseases through healing practices.” Further, the bill aims to protect innocents from “evil and sinister practices thriving on ignorance and ill-health of people.”
