The Israel/Iran Conflict Impact on Christians in Iraq

The Israel/Iran conflict impact on Christians in Iraq is already being felt. The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has sent shockwaves across the Middle East, with repercussions extending far beyond the immediate battlegrounds.  While war is not not new to them, this community is exhausted from decades of war, displacement, and persecution.

On June 13, 2025, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a large-scale preemptive strike targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. This operation, has led to casualties, including top Iranian military leaders and civilians on both sides. In retaliation, Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, intensifying the conflict. Missile and drones which fly directly overhead of millions of Iraqis.  The war has disrupted the region, with surging oil prices, restricted airspace, and mounting international pressure for de-escalation. The ripple effects of this conflict are already being felt most acutely by vulnerable communities, including Christians in Iraq.

Tracing Their Roots Back to the First Century

Iraq is home to one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, with roots tracing back to the first century. Despite their rich history, these communities have faced relentless challenges, particularly in recent decades. Communities such as the Assyrian Christians, Chaldean Catholic, Syriac Christians, Armenian Christians, Evangelical and Protestant Christians. While smaller in number, these communities have grown in recent years, often facing heightened scrutiny and persecution.  Each of these sects has its own unique traditions, liturgies, and cultural practices, but share a common struggle for survival.

The Impact on Christians in Iraq with Increased Regional Instability

Iraq, geographically and politically intertwined with both Iran and Israel, is bracing for the fallout. Experts warn that the conflict could lead to heightened international scrutiny and pressure on Iraq. For Iraqi Christians who have endured years of war and displacement, this instability is a painful reminder of past traumas.  Indigenous Ministries works directly with these Christians and refugees; families now facing another war. 

Persecution and Marginalization

In the region, Christians, particularly converts from Islam, face severe persecution. They are often accused of being agents of Western or Zionist influence. As tensions with Israel escalate, these accusations are likely to increase, putting Christians at greater risk.  However there are those who are invoking calm. The powerful Shia Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who, while condemning Israel’s attack on Iran, however, has called for Iraq not to be involved in the new war. He has also called for calm; will this last?  

Economic and Social Challenges

The conflict has disrupted trade routes and economic stability across the region. For Iraqi Christians, many of whom rely on small businesses or community support, these economic challenges could exacerbate their already precarious situation. For refugees, any crisis becomes an economic tipping point causing great distress and setbacks.  Each year we are excited when families in our program fare well enough economically to exist our Child Sponsorship Program.  The Israel/Iran Conflict economic impact on Christians in Iraq has the power to set back thousands of refugees. 

A Renewed Exodus

The combination of instability, persecution, and economic hardship may trigger a new wave of emigration among Iraqi Christians. This would further deplete a community that has already seen its numbers dwindle dramatically over the past three decades. Indigenous Ministries is currently assisting Christians who are returning from Europe back to their homeland on the Nineveh Plain as we now have a ministry center in this region.  

Our call to action:  As Christians of Iraq, Iran, Israel and the entire MENA region face uncertain times, we must not abandon them.  As the conflict unfolds, it is crucial for the global Christian community to stand with our brothers and sisters in Iraq, Iran, Israel and the broader Middle East, as we know God is in ultimate control and He has a plan underway.  Here are some ways to help:  Pray for the region, for Israel, and for the people of Iran, Iraq and the MENA region.  Pray for a quick resolution to this conflict and that it does not lead to a longer war.  Pray for the pastors and church leaders that they would lead with wisdom and prudence. 

Support relief efforts: Indigenous Ministries works to provide aid and support to displaced and persecuted Christians in the region.  Our Rapid Response Fund has, for over two decades helped many in this region.  Our teams are on the ground and able to respond quickly to those in need. 

Despite the challenges, the Christians in Iraq remain resilient; many have their eyes firmly on their Hope for eternity, Jesus Christ. Their faith and perseverance are a testament to God’s faithfulness and His Word being shared around the World.  As the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12:12, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
