Below is a list of the top 10 ongoing wars in 2024. With a new year upon us, it is painful to acknowledge the dozens of ongoing wars and conflicts worldwide, but the reality is people’s lives are forever altered because of these wars. With a purpose to shed light on this difficult subject, we hope this list will also stir you to compassionate action.

Israel/Gaza – On October 7, 2023 Hamas brutally attacked Israel setting off an explosive retaliation which is ongoing. Casualties are over 30,000; the civilian death toll is almost 12 times higher than that of either military.

* Iraq – The war with U.S. and coalition forces ended in 2003, but left in its wake 300,000+ casualties. Terrorist insurgencies, violence and political unrest continue to this day. Casualties in 2022 were 1,274 and in 2023, 1,910. Since 2003, Indigenous Ministries has ministered in Iraq and continue working to help internally displaced Iraqis.

Ukraine/Russia – This conflict was triggered by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and ramped up in February 2022. Casualties last year have been estimated at 20,000+. It is difficult to find accurate numbers on the number of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers who have died.


* Syrian Civil War – Started in 2011, this grueling conflict continues and this once-beautiful country has all but been destroyed. Casualties in 2023: 5802. More than 6.8 million Syrians remain internally displaced, and approximately 5.5 million Syrian refugees live in neighboring countries. Indigenous Ministries ministers to Syrian refugees in Iraq.

Afghanistan – War in this country has been ongoing with accelerated violence after the withdrawal of U.S. and U.N. forces in 2011. Casualties in 2021 were 30,936 and in 2022, 2,710.

* Sudan – In April 2023, fighting broke out during Ramadan in and around the city of Khartoum. As of December 2023, more than 12,000 have been killed with 5.8 million internally displaced and 1.5 million who have fled the country. Many of these are now in Egypt, where Indigenous Ministries works helping Sudanese refugees.

Myanmar Civil War – There were over 11,000 casualties in 2021 and 13,646 in 2022. Ongoing in some form since 1948, this has the distinction of being the longest civil war in the world in recent history.

Ethiopia – This violent civil war which started in 2020 has spilled into neighboring countries of Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia. Estimates of casualties since then range from 13,000 to more than 50,000.

Mexico – Our neighbor to the south is engaged in a violent ongoing drug war between the government and powerful drug cartels. Since 2006, casualties have been 350,000+ with 72,000+ people missing. Deaths in 2022 were 5,393.

Yemen – This civil war began in 2014 accounting for over 140,000 casualties since the division began, over 23,000 people lost their lies in 2021 as a result of the war.

TOP 10 ONGOING WARS IN 2024 Nigeria – Tensions going back to the 1969 violence against the Biafrans and other minorities are still creating conditions for killings and kidnappings by various groups including Boko Haram. In 2023 there were 8,017 casualties of violence.
